History
Philip Cullen was trained in the Crawford College of Art and Design in Cork in the south of Ireland, majoring
in Sculpture. After leaving college in the early 1990's he lived in Cork city for several years learning to play guitar and
mandoline, reading classical and modern literature and writing an as of yet, unpublished novel. He wroked for a while in an
antiquarian bookshop.
He then travelled throughout Australia for several years painting watercolours, writing songs, busking and working
in a variety of jobs including roadhouse cook, GO in a bulk-wheat handling facility, assisting a wheat farmer and a stint
as a market researcher.
Upon returning to Ireland he converted an old haybarn into a studio. He worked as a community arts officer with
marginilised groups using art as a developmental tool, and has been involved in arts education since 1996. He has taught watercolours,
oil and acrylic painting, community arts, music for fun and stone carving.
In that time he has participated in many group and solo shows most notably in the European Parliament in 2004,
other shows have included a solo show during Kilkenny Arts Festival entitled '90 Days' and an exhibition in Luxembourg
in 2001.
"My most recent work has been concerned with the attempted escape from reality, the significance of symbols and the use
of many different materials including engraved glass, stone, metal, paint and everyday objects. Processes have included welding,
stone carving, impasto alla prima oil painting, drawing with graphite and pencils, watercolour, empty bottles, recorded sound
and music."
